Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal: What's the Difference?
When you ask for a 'stump removed,' most people assume the entire thing, roots and all gets dug up and carted away. But in the tree services industry, stump grinding and stump removal are two distinct processes. Understanding the difference will help you choose the right method for your property and avoid paying for something you don't need.
What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding uses a specialised machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip away at a stump until it's been reduced to wood chips below ground level. The machine doesn't dig up or extract the stump, instead, it grinds it down in place.
At ASAP Stump Grinding on the Gold Coast, we grind to approximately 300mm (30cm) below the surface as standard. The remaining roots are left in the ground, where they gradually decompose naturally over the following years. The wood chips produced during grinding can be used as mulch or mixed back into the hole as fill.
What Is Stump Removal?
Full stump removal involves physically extracting the entire stump, including the root ball, from the ground. This is typically done with an excavator, backhoe or similar heavy machinery. The entire root system is pulled out, leaving a large hole that then needs to be backfilled.
Full removal is much more invasive, more expensive, and causes significantly more disruption to the surrounding lawn and garden. It's rarely necessary for residential properties.
Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Stump Grinding | Full Stump Removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Machine chips stump to 300mm below ground | Excavator extracts entire stump and root ball |
| Root system | Roots left to decompose naturally | Entire root system removed |
| Site disruption | Minimal — no excavation | High — large hole, significant lawn damage |
| Cost | Lower — most cost-effective option | Higher — heavy machinery and more labour |
| Time to complete | 1–4 hours per stump | Half day to full day |
| Best for | Most residential & commercial properties | Major construction or development sites only |
Which Method Is Right for You?
For the vast majority of Gold Coast homeowners, stump grinding is the right choice. Here's a simple way to decide:
Choose stump grinding if:
• You want to lay turf, plant a garden, or pave over the area
• The stump is in a yard, near a fence, or in a tight access area
• You want a clean, tidy result without heavy machinery tearing up your lawn
• You're on a residential property
Consider full stump removal if:
1. You're preparing a site for major construction (a new house, pool or large extension)
2. The root system is actively damaging underground pipes or foundations
3. A structural engineer or builder has specifically requested full root extraction
In 95% of the jobs we do at ASAP, stump grinding is entirely sufficient, and far more practical.
Will the Roots Regrow After Grinding?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The answer is: almost always no. Once a tree is removed and the stump is ground down, the root system no longer has a source of energy (the trunk and leaves) to sustain growth. In the vast majority of cases, the roots simply decompose underground over 3–10 years depending on the species and conditions.
A small number of species, particularly some eucalypts and certain fruit trees, can produce suckers from remaining roots. If you're concerned about this with a particular species, give us a call and we'll advise based on our experience with local tree types on the Gold Coast.
How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost Compared to Full Removal?
Stump grinding is significantly less expensive than full removal. Because the process doesn't require excavation or heavy machinery, costs are lower and the job can usually be completed in a single visit.
At ASAP, our minimum job cost is $300, which can cover multiple small stumps in good access conditions. Pricing depends on stump size, species, access, and number of stumps. Full stump removal by excavator typically costs several times more and requires at minimum a half day of machinery hire.
